Sitting = The New Smoking

Yup.

It's true.

Nowadays, there are more people not only working in offices, but also working remotely and from home, which usually means a lot of sitting down. And who can blame them? When you work from home, your cozy furniture is there. Couches. Beds. Chairs. Sometimes your dogs bed feels more comfy than your own! But not always! Just sometimes!

But I digress.

In all seriousness, numerous life-threatening illnesses are linked to too much sitting, including colon and breast cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes!

-Your Muscles Need You!

Muscles are healthy when they are used and challenged regularly, so it's not surprising that sitting for 8-9 hours a day brings some repercussions. Muscles are pliable, but when locked in a position for most of the day, they get seriously stiff! After years of sitting, the body gets used to it, and isn't as good at running, jumping, or even walking! Researchers think this might be why elderly people have such major issues remaining mobile later in life.

-Office Space Much?

For office-related work, tech jobs are the biggest and guiltiest parties. A 2010 study from the American Journal of Epidemiology, workers who sit more than 6 hours a day are 50% more likely to die of chronic diseases compared to those who sit for 3 hours of fewer. Prolonged sedentary time is bad for your heart, even if you're physically active and exercise regularly! However,  most companies are trying to incorporate more creative ways to work standing, including standing desks and treadmill desks!

-Here Comes Some Science!

LPL, or Lipoprotein Lipase, is an enzyme used to break down fat and use it for energy throughout your day! When this enzyme isn't working properly, fat is stored in the body. Again, even with 30-60 minutes of exercise, it's simply not enough to keep your LPL moving and functioning. Staying mobile, standing, and active throughout your whole day is the only way to stay on top of it!

-Now For Some Serious Science...

Sedentary habits are associated with higher risks of developing depression. With hours and hours of sitting related to numerous diseases and mortality rates, who wouldn't be depressed? The new is both terrifying and disheartening, but knowing about the risks isn't the reason that frequent sitters are more often depressed.

Sitting reduces the circulation of endorphins / feel-good hormones to make their way to their receptors. In a study from the Journal of Preventative Medicine, 9,000 middle-aged men and women were studied, and those who sat more than 6 hours in their day to day lives or at their jobs were 47% more likely to suffer from depression than those who sat for 3 hours or less. For those who didn't exercise, they were 99% higher at risk for depression than those who met the minimum physical activity requirements. Researchers concluded that exercise helps alleviate depression and similar symptoms!

-You NEED To Take a Multivitamin. Period.

Multivitamins are crucial in helping maintain a balance of essential vitamins and minerals we're not getting in our every day diets. It's called a supplement because it dies just that: supplement the good stuff into your system! It'll give you natural energy to stay active through your day!

Here's the one we take, and we've have yet to find a better one. It's called X-Factor Plus!

And if you find you struggle with depression or anxiety, there's also a great probiotic we take called VitaBiome, which helps reduce stress and anxiety, dramatically improving your health and happiness from the inside-out!

If you're interested in trying either of these, just click the links above or let us know!

In conclusion, ladies and gents, be mindful of how much sitting you do each day! A good rule of thumb: take 10 minutes out of every hour to get up, stretch, walk around, clear your head! Whatever you're working on, it can wait. Make your health and well-being a priority!

Rise, and Be Well!
