Do I even need supplements?
Short answer - Yes.There's a lot (and I mean A LOT) of supplements out there. Not only that, there's a TON of supplement companies and brands out there to chose from.
So which one do you pick? Which has the most bang for it's buck? What ones should you be taking?
Here's the long and short of it.
Everyone should at least be taking these:
Why? Because our daily nutrition typically includes a good chunk of processed foods, which do not maintain the amount of nutrients and minerals our body needs to really thrive.
- A Probiotic (not just yogurt or kombucha)
Why? Because our daily nutrition typically is processed and over saturated with sugars, it's easy for yeast and bad bacteria to have a field day in your gut flora... and we typically eat foods every day that can kill of the good bacteria in our stomach.
Supplementing other areas
Now, Ben and I have a line of vitamins and supplements that we have found and love. So we will always recommend that, as we've had great results from them.
However, we know people want to shop around, look at their options, and see what works best for them. So don't be shy to do your research! Most important thing to remember - you get what you pay for.
Often times the multivitamins you see in the store (rhymes with Pun A Day) are not of great quality. We know you have a budget, but save yourself some time in the long run and invest in a supplement you'll want to keep taking.
Better Sleep:
- Multivitamin
- Omega Fatty Acid
- Probiotic
What this does: If your body is deficient in fatty acids, it can effect the melatonin levels in you body. This in turn effects your sleep cycle. Matching up a great Probiotic and an Omega Fatty Acid can do wonders for your zzzs.Links for our suggestions listed below
Improved Mood:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Saint Johns Wart
- Vitamin D
What this does: No matter where you live, people often times have a Vitamin D deficiency since we spend majority of our time indoors. There are theories that increasing your Vitamin D can help improve serotonin levels which can in turn boost your mood. If you have a good quality multivitamin, this should kill two birds with one stone. St. Johns Wart can also help improve your mood, but keep in mind it causes some sensitivity to sun.Links for our suggestions listed below
Sharper Memory:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Magnesium (gentle formula)
- Ginkgo
What this does: Magnesium helps oxidize your blood cells, which makes them move more freely and bring oxygen to your brain. Same goes for Ginkgo! If you're noticing some brain fog, it might be a good time to add these into your regimen.Links for our suggestions listed below
Fat Loss:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Magnesium (gentle formula)
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
What this does: The two big ones here are magnesium and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Magnesium helps flush out anything that is not serving your tummy, which makes room for better absorption of foods and nutrients. This can actually help your body be less hungry, since it's getting more of what it needs with fewer meals. Alpha Lipoic Acid is a natural way of upping your metabolism, which makes those workouts count even more.Links for our suggestions listed below
Sustained Energy:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Vitamin D
- Magnesium (gentle formula)
- Green Tea or Yerba Mate
What this does: You're looking at not only boosting your metabolism, but also leveling out your blood sugar levels (thanks Magnesium) which reduces the peaks and valleys of your energy level through the day. If you're thinking about cutting out a few cups of coffee a day, try replacing them with Green Tea or Yerba Mate.Links for our suggestions listed below
Healthy Skin:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Vitamin E
- Evening Primrose
What this does: Studies have shown that if your gut is in poor shape, chances are your skin is too. Keep your skin happy and healthy by boosting the good bacteria in your stomach, and add in some Evening Primrose to help calm irritation (can be used both internally and externally).Links for our suggestions listed below
Stomach/GI Health:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Magnesium (gentle formula)
What this does: This was my big thing. If you are noticing irregular bowel movements, or new food sensitivities, it could be due to a yeast overgrowth. Best way to combat this is introduce good bacteria, and flush out the bad with Magnesium. The multivitamin will help your body get through die off symptoms faster, and ease any side effects of flushing out your GI track.Links for our suggestions listed below
Muscle Recovery/Joint health:
- Multivitamin
- Probiotic
- Turmeric
- Green Lipped Muscle
What this does: While you absolutely can take OTC pain killers, meds like Ibuprofen can be really hard on your stomach. Turmeric and Green Lipped Muscle have natural anti-inflammatory properties, and are great to use on a daily basis (especially if you're active at least 4 days a week). Your recovery is just as important as your workout. Keep those injuries and soreness at bay.Links for our suggestions listed below
